A Broken Spirit, A Contrite Heart
A broken spirit. A broken and contrite heart. If this is what it takes to have more of the Lord, then let it be.
Psalm 51:10-17
10 Create in me a clean heart, O God; and renew a right spirit within me.
11 Cast me not away from thy presence; and take not thy holy spirit from me.
12 Restore unto me the joy of thy salvation; and uphold me with thy free spirit.
13 Then will I teach transgressors thy ways; and sinners shall be converted unto thee.
14 Deliver me from bloodguiltiness, O God, thou God of my salvation: and my tongue shall sing aloud of thy righteousness.
15 O Lord, open thou my lips; and my mouth shall shew forth thy praise.
16 For thou desirest not sacrifice; else would I give it: thou delightest not in burnt offering.
17 The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit: a broken and a contrite heart, O God, thou wilt not despise.
In the midst of our trials, when our hearts are heavy and our spirits feel crushed, we find this profound truth: God does not despise a broken and contrite heart. In fact, it is precisely in our brokenness that we become most receptive to His presence and His work in our lives.
David's words in this psalm remind us that what God desires most is not our perfection, but our surrender. Not our strength, but our acknowledgment of our need for Him. In our weakness, His strength is made perfect.
If walking through this valley, if experiencing this brokenness, draws us closer to the heart of God, then we can say with confidence: "Let it be." For in His presence, even our deepest pain becomes a pathway to deeper intimacy with our Creator.
